We support you with the H4S4 conversion
The transition to SAP HCM for S/4HANA (H4S4) in detail
The current on-premise solution, SAP ERP Human Capital Management (HCM), will only be available until the end of 2027, with extended maintenance running through 2030. SAP's so-called Compatibility Mode for HCM, which applies to integrated installations on an S/4HANA system, will end even sooner, at the close of 2025. The corresponding usage rights will expire on January 1, 2026.
The transition to SAP HCM for S/4HANA (H4S4), the successor solution, presents significant challenges for SAP user companies. However, these can be effectively managed with careful project planning and execution.
With our comprehensive approach, we can work with you to develop a realistic path for the switch to H4S4, whether you're opting for the on-premise edition or the Private Cloud Edition (PCE).
Which HCM applications will be transitioned during a migration to H4S4, and what new functionalities can companies expect? What migration options are available to help ensure a smooth transition to H4S4? Is it truly worth moving from SAP ERP HCM to H4S4? And what long-term benefits can your company anticipate?
We can answer all these questions and more as your trusted partner for your H4S4 conversion.
Phases of H4S4 Migration at a glance
Our approach to a successful conversion to H4S4
Phase 0 (optional)
HR/IT Transformation
As the foundation for a successful H4S4 migration, we work together to develop your HR/IT target vision that meets your specific requirements.
Mehr erfahren
Given the rapidly evolving SAP roadmap, many companies find it difficult to establish clear reference points for their own project planning.
We work closely with you to assess your HR business requirements and derive a target architecture and solution that takes into account the technical framework and timeline.
We stay on top of all the latest developments in the SAP roadmap and collaborate with you to develop the optimal HR/IT roadmap—always considering feasibility and the cost-benefit ratio.
Phase 1
H4S4 Pre-Study
As part of the pre-study, both bottom-up and top-down checks are used to create a solid foundation for a successful transition to H4S4.
Mehr erfahren
The H4S4 pre-study forms the solid foundation for a smooth and secure H4S4 project. It provides you with planning certainty and helps minimize risks. We analyze the costs and technical pre-projects involved in migrating to SAP HCM for S/4HANA (H4S4) and create a customized roadmap for a seamless transition.
During the scoping phase, defining the current state, and developing your target vision, both top-down checks (e.g., management workshops) and bottom-up checks provide valuable, comprehensive insights.
Through the bottom-up checks, we assess your technical and business readiness, offering granular input for further workshops.
These insights are based on best practices from over 100 S/4 projects.
Phase 2
HANA-DB Upgrade
As part of the migration to SAP HCM for S/4HANA, your database will need to be migrated to HANA DB.
Mehr erfahren
Your current relational database will be migrated to the HANA DB. In this process, it will also be necessary to adjust your custom code and developments.
We apply the following steps for the transition to HANA DB:
- HANA Readiness: Validation and adjustment of custom applications that are either incompatible with HANA or may cause issues.
- HANA Awareness: Introduction or enhancement of programming guidelines, training employees, and ensuring that new developments are compatible with HANA.
- HANA Optimization: Leveraging HANA’s capabilities to optimize processing steps—such as managing data by deleting unnecessary information.
- H4S4 Migration
Phase 3
Closing Functional Gaps
SAP ERP HCM modules or applications that will no longer be available in the future must be analyzed, evaluated, and, if necessary, replaced during this phase. At the same time, a clear plan for essential components and processes needs to be developed and implemented.
Mehr erfahren
In this phase, we begin with a high-level comparison of the functionality between SAP HCM and H4S4. Building on that, a detailed analysis of the currently used SAP ERP HCM components is conducted to evaluate the available options for future use—whether in H4S4 On-Premise, H4S4 PCE, or SAP SuccessFactors. Based on this analysis, p78 will provide a clear recommendation for action.
Phase 4
H4S4 Migration
Zum Abschluss wird Ihr SAP ERP HCM System auf die H4S4 Lösung umgestellt. Dieser Vorgang ist mit einem „Systemupgrade“ oder „Releasewechsel“ vergleichbar.
Mehr erfahren
The work packages for the S/4HANA upgrade include the following core activities:
- HANA Readiness Check (the technical foundation for the actual migration)
- Simplification Item Check
- Custom Code Adjustments and setting up HANA sizing
- Compatibility Check for installed add-ons and activated business functions
Additionally, general post-upgrade tasks must be completed (similar to a release change).
Lessons Learned
Our experience from various H4S4 projects
Planung und Steuerung
- HR/IT Roadmap in place?
At the start of the initiative, the "big picture" or overall roadmap for the HCM system landscape should be clear. Additionally, project dependencies and technical prerequisites need to be addressed. Example: S/4HANA system upgrade, ILM project, etc. - Project Planning as a Key Success Factor
The success of your initiative hinges on detailed scoping of the H4S4 migration project and proper project planning. Recommendation: Conduct an H4S4 pre-study in advance! - Leverage SAP Tool-Set
Standard tools such as the SAP S/4HANA Readiness Check, SAP SuccessFactors Readiness Check, SAP S/4HANA Conversion Guide, and the Custom Code Migration Guide for SAP S/4HANA are valuable resources and should be utilized - Change Management ist essential
Even if there are minimal functional changes for end users, the transition should be professionally managed. Good communication is key! Example: Impact on SAP ESS/MSS.
Funktionalitäten und Technik
- Take Simplifications Seriously
Don’t underestimate the effort required for the simplifications. This is especially true for extensive custom developments, which may need to be replaced with standard SAP solutions. - Leverage New Standard Features
Go beyond a purely "technical upgrade." Use this opportunity to "cut the old ties" and take advantage of the new features in SAP Standard and HANA DB. Examples: Manager’s Desktop, performance optimization. - Plan Cutover in Detail
The productive migration usually involves several days of downtime. Plan this as meticulously as possible with a detailed cutover plan, taking into account past experiences regarding run times. - Follow New Architecture Recommendations
Consider SAP's updated recommendations, such as moving from a standalone Fiori frontend to an embedded version when planning the future HCM system architecture.
